Quillx uses AI to help you edit and improve your own writing, never to write it for you. This page is the plain-language version of what that means for your work: which models we use, what leaves your browser, what we keep, and what we will never do with your book. The legally binding detail is in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service; nothing on this page adds to them.

We don’t train AI on your manuscript.

Quillx does not use your writing, your memories, or your Series Bible to train any model. Our AI providers, Anthropic and OpenAI, are used through their API platforms, which do not use API content to train their models, and the optional settings that would let them do so are switched off in our accounts. They keep requests for a limited time for abuse and safety monitoring — currently up to 30 days, longer where the law requires it or a request is flagged; see our Privacy Policy.

1. Quill never writes your book

Quill is an editor and a teacher, not a ghostwriter. It proofreads, checks consistency, gives feedback and recommendations, answers questions about your book, and explains craft and industry standards. It does not draft, continue, expand or rewrite your manuscript, and it does not write blurbs, query letters or synopses for you. The corrections it does propose (spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency) are applied only when you approve each one.

2. Which models we use

Quillx runs on Anthropic and OpenAI models, chosen per task: frontier models for proofreading and editorial feedback, balanced models for everyday chat, and fast models for mechanical background work like extracting a memory or screening a message. The exact list available to you is shown in Plans & usage.

3. What leaves your browser

Your browser never talks to an AI provider directly. Requests go through our authenticated gateway, which sends only the prompt, the project context you selected, role instructions, and bounded reference material for the request you made. Provider credentials never leave our servers.

4. Your text is data, not instructions

Manuscript text, uploaded reference files, retrieved chapters and chat history are all wrapped as untrusted data inside the prompt, subordinate to the safety rules, so Quill treats text in your book as material to work on, not as instructions to follow.

5. What Quill remembers, and how to stop it

Quill keeps small notes about your writing preferences and habits — never your manuscript text. Background memory is off until you explicitly enable it. Manuscript indexing has a separate choice and also requires the book owner’s approval. Every memory is visible, editable and deletable in the Quill workspace’s Memory section; you can switch memory off entirely, switch it off for one book, or use incognito for a conversation, which reads nothing and saves nothing. Memories are private to you: collaborators on a shared project never see them.

6. The search index over your book

So Quill can answer questions about your book with citations, we keep a search index of your chapters and a mathematical representation of each chunk. It is protected by the same per-project access rules as the manuscript, searched only within the project you are asking about, and deleted when the chapter, the project, or your account is deleted.

7. What we log

Every AI request is recorded for accountability and abuse tracing — which entity, which operation, how many tokens, whether content changed. Audit records never store your manuscript text or the before-and-after of an AI edit, and the database itself enforces that.

8. Nothing is changed without you

AI-proposed changes to your manuscript are applied only after you confirm them. Any AI feature that can modify your writing has to keep that human review step.

9. Telling readers that AI helped

Personas and roles are labelled in the interface by Quillx, not by the model, so a label cannot be argued away by a clever prompt. If you want the book itself to say so, turn on the AI-assisted-content declaration in Publishing & marketing and the note is printed on your export’s copyright page. What you disclose beyond that is your decision — some publishers, competitions and storefronts have their own rules, and we do not make that call for you.
